We have been growing coffee at Crossroads since 2014. In 2017, we expanded coffee cultivation even further. At this point, the coffee plantation with 18,000 trees occupies about 8 hectares of our farm.
We mainly grow Batian, Ruiru 11, SL 28, and K7 varieties at an altitude of 1500 meters. The harvesting is done by hand. Since 2021, we have been able to use our "wet mill", where the coffee cherries are peeled and pre-sorted.
They are then fermented for 28 to 34 hours. They are then dried on so-called "drying beds" in the Kenyan sun.
We are always working flat out to meet the high demands of coffee lovers.
Partner
Last year, 2022, our yield amounted to 23 tons of coffee cherries, most of which we were able to sell to our long-term partner "wertkaffee". "wertkaffee" then processes them and produces coffee for gourmets, so that you can also benefit from one of the best coffees in the world in Germany.
The website of "wertkaffee" offers the possibility to learn more or to try the coffee yourself: mehrwert-kaffee.de
Cupping Labor
At the beginning of 2023, we were able to inaugurate the first cupping laboratory in the Rift valley region, which allows us to test different coffees and perform "cuppings". This allows the entire region to analyze their quality, differentiate and thus get better prices.
Wet-Mill
Since serving our local community is also very important to us, the small farmers in the area get the opportunity to use our "wet mill" for a small return. In this way, we strengthen our relationships with the small farmers and the community. In addition, the surrounding coffee farmers receive further training so that the quality of the coffee in the entire region increases.
